The City Marshal helps protect the citizens of the City of Vidalia, their well-being, and enhance the quality of life by enforcing the health, safety, zoning and sanitation codes. The City Marshal promotes a safe, clean and healthy living environment for all, and helps protect and maintain property values. A main focus is on building safety and providing our customers with accurate and up-to-date building code information. The City of Vidalia enforces the Georgia State Minimum Standard codes. These codes are used to review and inspect all construction in the City.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT BUILDING PERMITS:
- Permits are necessary for your personal safety. They ensure all building codes and fire safety codes are followed.
- Permits are required for the following:
- Construction, enlarging, altering, repairing, moving, demolishing, or changing the occupancy of a building or structure.
- Erecting, altering, repairing, removing, converting, or replacing any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system.
- Installing any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system which is regulated by codes.

The cost of a building permit varies according to the scope of work. All permits issued are valid for a period of six (6) months prior to the commencement of the construction. Continual progress must be made to keep the permit in active status.
As of July 1, 2008, the State of Georgia requires that all building construction projects over $2,500.00 be performed by a LICENSED contractor; Licensed as General, Light-Commercial or Residential Basic contractor.
